Region 12 2005 by C. Brickner Cal City has hosted the Region 12 Championships over the course of at least 40 years now. We lost a day to non-race-able weather this year on the second Sunday. Many pilots went home that night to earn crew credits, and rest up for the heavy duty grinding of low thermaling and late triggers that permeated this event. Day One Task for 15Meter Class - Lone Pine AP - Inyokern AP - Johannesburg –home for 207.94 miles. 1 686 WX Rogers, Walt Discus 2A 1 686 65.64 207.25 The Sports pilots had a nice time. Ron Desilets tagged the fleet to Cinder Cone, then reversed south and got as far as Rosamond for a day win. Doug Easton proved an independent thinker, and ran the half circle south onto the San Gabriel Mtns around the Edwards airspace for a close second. Doug reached to the only cumulus visible in the southern state, and the highest lift band. Day Two task was a small double circle, Inyokern-Johannesburg-Mojave-Goler-Johannesburg-home for 158 miles. 1 1342 11W Eiler, Martin ASW-27 2 732 66.48 152.54 Sports Class won by Ron Desilets again for the day with 75 miles, followed by Easton, Payne and Barry. All were happy simply to land at home. This was survival. Day Three was an almost bowtie task. Barstow-Inyokern, Mojave, and home for 173 miles. Barbeque day, and we landed a wad of them out, but got them back in time to eat. 1 1664 11W Eiler, Martin ASW-27 4 322 145.99 Sports Class all came home from short miles. Two hour POST. Day Four was a twice around triangle, Goler-Neuralia-Cal City, for 100 miles. 1 2209 11W Eiler, Martin ASW-27 5 545 56.05 95.95 Sports Class was two hour minimum time POST. 1 3307 TP Payne, Jim ASH-25 4 892 40.27 52.44 80.55 104.88 MT15 Congratulations to our home pilot, Marty Eiler on his first Regional FAI Class win! Sports Class, the trophy was retained for another year by Jim Payne. But he really was given a run for his money. Ron Desilets was ripping through the miles in his Ventus C, showing his home base experience, winning a couple days. Doug Easton took a day off for a daughter’s birthday, or look out ! His miles were from Neuralia to Mojave to Rosamond to Cal City to Neuralia to Mojave to home, for the final day’s win. Russ Barry tagged the FAI class some, and went POSTal some, and always landed safely on nice spots, a commendable record. They thank the SCDSA Grob for completing the class and crewing.
